Deck the Halls for Halloween
By LAURIE MANSFIELD
10/14/2000 - Halloween
is beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Tree ornaments and lights typical to the December holiday
have been redesigned and recolored for the spookiest night of the year.
Light strands illuminate Halloween icons such as ghosts,
skeletons and gravestones. Instead of Christmas trees, there are tabletop metal trees to
hold Halloween ornaments. Instead of Christmas carols, there are booklets of pumpkin
carols.
True, the Oct. 31 celebration has a lot of catching up to do
before it becomes as profitable as Christmas, a $50 billion product. This year's Halloween
sales are estimated at $5 billion, said Kristi Ernsting, a holiday expert at Hallmark
headquarters in Kansas City.
WalMart on Southeast 14th Street set aside two additional
aisles this year to contain all its Halloween decorations, store manager Scott Niernberger
said.
Ernsting attributed the increase in decorations as well as
the day's popularity to baby boomers, who like Halloween because it reminds them of their
childhoods. The day is becoming more of a family celebration, she said.
It's also becoming more stylish, thanks to designers like
Martha Stewart, who this year declared Halloween one of her favorite holidays. Her
magazine, Living, dedicated an issue to making Halloween more of a high-class holiday.
As Halloween evolves, so do the decorations. Plastic pumpkins
are still around, but the emphasis this year is on lighting and wood, plaster and metal
home decor items, said Laurie Bashara, a manager at Target on Army Post Road.
